Parish Work and Visitation
Sr Catherine Ryan does parish ministry at Our Lady of Fatima parish in Palmyra, Western Australia. Catherine’s key work, which she loves, is visiting people who are housebound due to age, illness, mental or physical incapacity. Catherine is inspired by these visits, seeing many people who manage to sustain a lively quality of life despite great difficulties such as being a double amputee. Fatima Care – the home visitation parish aspect – assists people with meals, gardening, shopping, spiritual sustenance and other needs.
Catherine also prepares people for baptism and confirmation and runs Advent and Lenten programs. Her greatest challenge is working in isolation. Although there are monthly Pastoral Council meetings and many groups in a lively community there is no direct support or supervision for Catherine. Weekly Monday morning tea goes some way to sustaining Catherine but home visitation remains the real “Nano” aspect of her work.
