Hamilton parishioners’ support for Peru Mission continues
Parishioners of Hamilton, Victoria continue to support the Presentation Sisters Mission in Peru through their fund raising efforts.
Over the past few years women of the parish have been invited to sell more of the craftwork at various markets in their home town.
“There was never any hesitation as we knew all proceeds were returned to the Peruvian women via much needed educational programs,” parishioner Anne Slattery said.
“In fact I’ve even been selling Peru items from home when family and friends visit. This year they have certainly added to the total raised.”
Each year the parish volunteers look forward to a new bag of supplies to arrive at the office from Peru. They are sent from Sr Margaret Kehoe on behalf of the Peruvian women. The items have varied, but are always guaranteed to be colourful and bright.
Placemats, handbags and purses have been well sought after by the adults, while the children have especially favoured the Peruvian dolls, decorated pens and hair clips.
This Christmas buyers will hope to be able to adorn their trees with the beautifully crafted decorations received in the past which have become a popular purchase.
The next market and one where repeat buyers seek out the Peru stall each year, is the St Mary’s Primary School Christmas Expo. The annual fundraising event is open to the public and includes a Hamilton street parade with all local Schools and Community Groups dressing up and joining in with the festivities.
The volunteers who sell on the Peru stall are pleased to make a contribution, adding that the best outcome is the knowledge that women living in disadvantaged regions of Peru are benefiting from a small commitment of their time.
