The Nano Challenge by Sr. Noela Fox pbvm
Sr Noela Fox, historian and author thrives on a challenge and this challenge is one Noela definitely couldn’t ignore!
“A circular was sent from the Nano Nagle Centre Ballygriffin, in April 2014, which issued an invitation for someone to write an historical narrative about Nano Nagle,” explained Noela.
The Sisters had been approached by Columba Press (Dublin) about the possibility of a piece of writing to commemorate the fact that Nano had been declared venerable. The novel, as Columba Press said, was to be “engaging, inspiring, true to the period and totally accurate in all detail concerning Nano’s life.” It was also to be easily read by the ordinary person.
“Although to date I had written only historical books, including books on Nano’s life, I decided to take up the challenge to write this novel. To my surprise, after submitting the required outline and a couple of chapters, I and another writer, were short listed by Columba Press and the panel, and asked to submit further chapters, after which I was selected as winner of the challenge. I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity and am looking forward to the launch in early 2016.
I have enjoyed the writing which I found vastly different to writing history where one writes as an outsider, an observer and a commentator, to writing a novel where one becomes a participant, writing from the inside, so to speak,” says Noela.
“I congratulate all who took part in this challenge and hope that those who did not win will have the opportunity to publish their work.
“My thanks to Columba Press and the Irish Sisters for without their support this competition would not have been held, and I hope you all enjoy reading the book as much as I did in writing it.”
