The People’s Tribute to Sr Patricia in PNG
Sr Judith Yerim gives a moving account of the people of Ningil and surrounding villages, who gathered in their traditional way, to mourn and pay tribute to Sr Patricia. Sr Judith writes,
“Sr Trish was one of the first group of Presentation Sisters to arrive to Ningil in 1966. She was in PNG till just a few years ago, but died in Tasmania, Australia on the 15th April this year. It was a special occasion for us here in Ningil. Women, men and children came to the station to show their love, thanks and respect for Trish in our traditional way. They came with faces covered with mud to the convent to show their sympathy. A tent (Hans Krai) was built and people from nearby villages came every night to stay with us praying and sharing stories and memories of all the help Trish gave at Ningil and her many years of loving service.
We had a Funeral Mass, celebrated by Fr. Mattias Koye and Sisters from Arop and Aitape came. They and others shared her life story after the homily. A few days later we finished off the Hans Kroi and sent the people home. The Sisters and some women organised cooking. Others prepared sago to take with them. After a last meal together the Hans Kroi tent was removed and the place was cleaned up. May your soul rest in peace Sr Trish, and thanks for your life with us here.”
