Sr Suzanne Gentle, Co-ordinator of Centacare Community Connections Cannon Hill in Brisbane, tells of Centacare’s support for refugees.

“One of our programmes, ‘Welcome Circles’  offers support, education, practical assistance and advocacy to refugees and asylum seekers..  By offering a safe and peaceful environment men and women can meet other people, learn new skills, speak to their family members in their home country via Skype, be involved in activities and share their gifts and talents with each other.

Nirosha Ponnuthurai, an asylum seeker from Sri Lanka, and myself were recently interviewed on 96.5FM radio station, Queensland. I invite you to listen to the story of this courageous woman Nirosha, who escaped her home country of Sri Lanka by boat with her two children (10 and 12 years old).”  Download the podcast

After time spent in detention on Christmas Island and in Adelaide, Nirosha and her 2 children have settled in Brisbane.  With no work rights, this gifted and talented tailor enjoys being part of the ‘Busy Fingers’ sewing group who also meet at Cannon Hill.   Read more of Nirosha’s story.
