General Assembly for PNG and Solomon Islands
Sr. Elizabeth Sep from Papua New Guinea attended the General Assembly for PNG and Solomon Islands at Divine Word University in Madang in November 2013. One hundred and fifty delegates, six from each diocese accompanied the Bishops were there except for the three Bishops from the Solomon Islands.
“It was great week for me to listen and share my experiences with the other participants from different dioceses” said Sr Elizabeth.
The theme of the Assembly was based on John 4:16f, The Samaritan Woman at the Well. “Give me some of that life-giving water that I may never be thirsty again”. Each day different speakers spoke on their key topics related to this powerful theme.
“The talks and discussions,” explained Elizabeth, “were about Ecclessia, our experiences of our faith community and commitment to Evangelization. We discussed how we encounter Jesus in the poor, children and the sick that are thirsty, sitting at their wells. We try to evangelize according the signs of our times, and we follow our Pastoral Plan, remembering that every person is in the image of Christ.”
“In our ministries we can consider what Nano would do,” she reflected, “when there is violence and injustices in our places. I believe Nano would help, so we should not be silent witnesses, but through ‘communion’ speak out against anti-Christian structures, and ideologies.”
Back in Aitape after the Assembly, Bishop Otto and our delegates organized three evenings at the Community Centre to tell the people about the Assembly. The sharing included short speeches on prayer, singing, drama and some D.V.D.s. Many people came including lots of children.
Elizabeth is commissioned by the Aitape Diocese as a Pastoral Worker in Arop and district.
